From his days with Street Drum Corps, playing junkyard-bucket-style shows on bin cans and kitchenware, to his time with the legendary Sum 41, to now touring with Electric Callboy for their European festival dates, the drummer has a whole catalogue of drumming styles and experiences behind him.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s found a setup that works for pretty much everything. Zummo plays <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/SJC-Drums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SJC drums<\/a><\/strong>, adapting them to what he needs on stage: two kick drums, one rack tom, and two floor toms, with a 12-inch rack, rather than a 13-inch rack, for his Electric Callboy setup.<\/p>\n<p>The drums never falter. They\u2019re durable enough to take any amount of hard hitting, gig after gig. Zummo\u2019s even used one of SJC\u2019s most affordable kits\u2026 and drowned it in a pool for a music video \u2013 and it still functioned afterwards!<\/p>\n<p>Drumming for Electric Callboy is a \u201cworkout\u201d, but it has the \u201csame energy\u201d as Sum 41, Zummo says, making him feel right at home with the band and the crowd. It\u2019s lucky that the vibe is so similar, as the collaboration came about in a very spontaneous, albeit very last-minute, way.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CI_was_able_to_jump_right_in_I_did_three_shows_in_a_row_with_them%E2%80%A6_and_it_worked_out_somehow%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%93_Frank_Zummo\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #f08000;\"><strong><em>\u201cI was able to jump right in. After getting to grips with the songs for five hours in his hotel room, Zummo stepped up to the mark when the time came and continued for another two gigs: &#8220;I was able to jump right in. Possibly one of the biggest highlights of his career was filling in at a M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce gig \u2013 a full-circle event for Zummo, who attended his first ever M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce concert at the age of five, the concert that set him on the path to drumming greatness.<\/p>\n<p>Opportunities like that don\u2019t just land on your lap, they come from years of hard work, setbacks, and perseverance. Zummo\u2019s parents were in a band, and he knew he wanted that life for himself \u2013 but he also knew the graft he\u2019d have to put in.<\/p>\n<p>He started playing the drums at as young as two years old, and ever since that first M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce gig, he\u2019s been chasing the feeling of that arena-filling sound and the energy that comes with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing in that arena, feeling that power, I knew right there, and it set me on the path that I\u2019m still living today,\u201d Zummo explains. It\u2019s a powerful experience to have at five years old, but it\u2019s sculpted him into the famed, influential, and highly passionate drummer he is.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to form Street Drum Corps, where he played on anything he could find before bringing in a drum kit that consisted of a few large drums rather than a &#8220;tonne&#8221; of drums, as this suited their setup better than a comprehensive kit. In 2015, he joined Sum 41 &#8211; this was his big break. He added ferocity and even more aggression to the band, and he hasn&#8217;t slowed down since.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s particularly inspiring about the drummer is his work ethic.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you don\u2019t get to the level that Zummo\u2019s at without being so dedicated and assiduous, but he also takes these opportunities with gratitude and curiosity &#8211; even when things don\u2019t work out, he views the setback as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.805beer.com\/805-beer-rise-up-with-sum-41-frank-zummo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chance to learn and grow<\/a><\/strong>. Mental health and the lessons he\u2019s taken from each gig are all detailed in his new book, coming out in Autumn.<\/p>\n<p>These are also the kinds of things he teaches at his drum workshops, inspiring the next generation to take up drumming, find a passion for music, and keep a level head through such a crazy, demanding, and thrilling lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>It would be easy to let this degree of success go to your head, but Zummo doesn&#8217;t. Instead, he uses his experiences to help others who have the same dream he had. His drum workshops go beyond basic classes, they have a social purpose. He teaches young aspiring musicians how to cope with the pressure that the industry brings and how to break through barriers they might face.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CGo_until_it_happens_Then_when_it_happens_just_keep_going%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%93_Frank_Zummo\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #f08000;\"><strong><em>\u201cGo until it happens. Then, when it happens, just keep going.\u201d &#8211; Frank Zummo<\/em><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>His advice for young drummers wanting to make it in the industry? \u201cJust do it until it happens.\u201d It\u2019s simple but makes so much sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust have tunnel vision,\u201d Zummo says, \u201cLearn everything you [can]. Never stop learning\u2026 Go until it happens. Then, when it happens, just keep it going.\u201d This is exactly what Zummo practices; when Sum 41 ended, he didn\u2019t stop touring, he found Electric Callboy <em>and <\/em>started a new band, Gravas, who are releasing new music.<\/p>\n<p>Zummo is a thrill to watch on stage. It&#8217;s easy to see how those early gig experiences, his endless drive, and passion have shaped him as a musician. Then, when it happens, just keep going.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3><p>His advice for young drummers wanting to make it in the industry? \u201cJust do it until it happens.\u201d It\u2019s simple but makes so much sense.<\/p><p>\u201cJust have tunnel vision,\u201d Zummo says, \u201cLearn everything you [can]. Never stop learning\u2026 Go until it happens. Then, when it happens, just keep it going.\u201d This is exactly what Zummo practices; when Sum41 ended, he didn\u2019t stop touring, he found Electric Callboy <em>and <\/em>started a new band, Gravas, who are releasing new music.<\/p><p>Zummo is a thrill to watch on stage. It's easy to see how those early gig experiences, his endless drive, and passion have shaped him as a musician.
