Not one individual &#8211; either before or after Cobain &#8211; has destroyed the perception of the &#8220;mainstream&#8221; and initiated a shift in attitude towards music and the industry.<\/p>\n<p>A musician with generational talent, Kurt exuded confidence and personality. He naturally captured the hearts of every teenager and young adult at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Musically, Kurt had a distinctive playing style, often chaotic yet clear, dissonant yet melodic, raw yet precise. This blend of raw punk rock and melodic vocal lines became their signature sound, the one that they would take all the way to the top of the charts. But for now, <em>Bleach<\/em> would only see relative success, mainly on the college scene.<\/p>\n<p>When it came to recording their second album, Sub Pop was in financial trouble and looking for a major label to become a subsidiary of. Cutting out the middleman, Nirvana signed with David Geffen&#8217;s DGC Records and began recording <em>Nevermind<\/em>, though now they had the addition of drummer, and legend in his own right, Dave Grohl.<\/p>\n<p>Released on 24th September 1991, Geffen hoped the record would sell 250,000 copies in total&#8230; but a surge began to happen. Copies sold out in northwest America and the UK within a matter of days, and the album debuted at 144 on the billboard 200.<\/p>\n<p>The band released a music video for the lead single &#8220;Smells Like Teen Spirit&#8221;, which found its spot on MTV. It was so popular that MTV quickly ramped up its number of plays, playing it at all hours of the day.<\/p>\n<p>The marketing strategy DGC records had drawn up went out the window. Everything accelerated quicker than they could plan for, and soon the band were reaching Top 40s globally. The album achieved gold status within a year, putting itself straight into the mainstream.<\/p>\n<p>Challenging the mainstream directly and displaying as much angst and aggression as they could, Nirvana struck a chord with society at the time. Unafraid to talk about dark topics and sing about all things disturbing in a humorous light was an unfiltered approach to music. This was severely lacking at the time. Another effect that was present in a lot of Kurt\u2019s performances was the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Electro-Harmonix-Small-Clone-Analog-Chorus\/8WO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electro Harmonix Small Clone<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You rarely hear this pedal carrying the load on its own, as it&#8217;s usually paired with the aforementioned DS-1. Having said this, it does appear a lot. The Small Clone is a chorus pedal that can truly infuse your sound with whirls of sonic depth, resulting in an enriched and delightful tone.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to hear exactly what we&#8217;re talking about, just listen to \u201cCome As You Are\u201d or the break in \u201cDrain You\u201d. In both cases, the Small Clone is abundantly clear. His sound is relatively amp-heavy, but for those looking for complete accuracy, let&#8217;s look at the final few tweaks&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Going back to distortion, while the DS-1 and DS-2 were the main pedals used by Kurt, there were a couple of others that were used to obtain higher levels of destruction.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Pro-Co-RAT-2-Distortion\/CDA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ProCo Rat<\/a><\/strong> was only used in the studio for <em>Nevermind<\/em> and it offered a different type of distortion to the Boss DS-1. Kurt used this pedal with almost all the dials turned up to the max, which infuses the guitar tone with an unprecedented level of destruction.<\/p>\n<p>The SansAmp Classic also comes with characteristic switches too, which allows you to fine-tune the nuance and overall tonality of the pedal. Kurt had the first three and last two on, which includes both mid-boosts and closer miking for more presence from the pedal.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Electro Harmonix EchoFlanger was used by Cobain in the studio for <em>In Utero<\/em>. It&#8217;s also\u00a0present in the solo to \u201cHeart-Shaped Box\u201d and in the whole of \u201cScentless Apprentice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The pedal did appear under a couple of different names, as the same circuitry is loaded in the Electro-Harmonix PolyChorus, which also spent some time on Kurt\u2019s board.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the integral components behind the composition of their third album, and the reason Kurt had two was that during its initial use, the Echo Flanger broke and had to be sent for repair. The AC30C2X is constructed with two 12\u201d Celestion Alnico Blues speakers, three 12AX7 Preamp tubes, and four EL84 tubes. It emits 30 watts of pure power, perfect for the slushing and delightful tones of \u201cSliver\u201d, you\u2019ll be having so much fun that you won\u2019t ask for anyone to \u201cTake you home\u201d.<\/p><p>The AC30C2X lets you dial up the tone to the next level. If the two internal speakers aren\u2019t loud enough for you, just attach the amplifier to an external speaker cabinet for thunderous amplitudes of sound.<\/p><p>This amplifier is the quintessential choice for that iconic Nirvana sound, and you\u2019ll soon be slamming down power chords every time you take to the stage.<\/p><hr \/><h3>Effect pedals<\/h3><p>When it comes to effects pedals, Kurt\u2019s setup is relatively simple: distortion, distortion, and more distortion. OK, there is a little more to it than that, with a few minor additions over the years, but to attain the true tone of Kurt, our focus is destruction.<\/p><h4>Beginner<\/h4><p><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-12293 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-blog-g4m-co-uk\/2022\/07\/Boss-DS-1-Distortion-Pedal-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Boss-DS-1-Distortion-Pedal\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>As seen throughout Kurt\u2019s discography, there is only one place to start. And that is with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Boss-DS-1-Distortion-Pedal\/7OT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boss DS-1<\/a><\/strong>. If you weren\u2019t to spend another penny on another effect for the Nirvana frontman\u2019s sound other than on this pedal, you would be perfectly justified.<\/p><p>The DS-1 is iconic, and it's often seen as the primary source of distortion for thousands of musicians. DS pedals were the distorted sound used throughout Kurt\u2019s career, but he did replace his DS-1 with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Boss-DS-2-Turbo-Distortion-Guitar-Pedal\/7OR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DS-2<\/a><\/strong>, which he used with the exact same parameters as his DS-1.<\/p><p>Both pedals are similarly priced, so if you want \u201cBleach\u201d and \u201cNevermind\u201d distortion then use the DS-1. For \u201cIn Utero\u201d and \u201cMTV Unplugged\u201d, use the DS-2. Another effect that was present in a lot of Kurt\u2019s performances was the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Electro-Harmonix-Small-Clone-Analog-Chorus\/8WO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electro Harmonix Small Clone<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>You rarely hear this pedal carrying the load on its own, as it's usually paired with the aforementioned DS-1. Having said this, it does appear a lot. The Small Clone is a chorus pedal that can truly infuse your sound with whirls of sonic depth, resulting in an enriched and delightful tone.<\/p><p>If you want to hear exactly what we are talking about, just listen to \u201cCome as You Are\u201d or the break in \u201cDrain You\u201d. In both cases, the Small Clone is abundantly clear. However, we aren\u2019t sure how much of the recorded tone is this Electro Harmonix pedal, but we're certain it was a prominent part of his live rig during the <em>Nevermind<\/em>\u00a0tour.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h4>Professional<\/h4><p><strong><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-12295 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-blog-g4m-co-uk\/2022\/07\/Pro-Co-RAT-2-Distortion-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pro-Co-RAT-2-Distortion\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/strong><\/p><p>So, we've essentially covered the necessary pedals for Kurt's signature tone. His sound is relatively amp-heavy, but for those looking for complete accuracy, let's look at the final few tweaks...<\/p><p>Going back to distortion, while the DS-1 and DS-2 were the main pedals used by Kurt, there are a couple of others that were used to obtain higher levels of destruction.<\/p><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Pro-Co-RAT-2-Distortion\/CDA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ProCo Rat<\/a><\/strong> only saw usage in the studio for <em>Nevermind<\/em> and it was used to offer a different type of distortion as opposed to the Boss DS-1. With the album heavily constructed around the use of distortion, Kurt needed a different timbre to maximise the effectiveness and impact of certain verses.<\/p><p><img class=\"size-medium wp-image-12296 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-blog-g4m-co-uk\/2022\/07\/Tech-21-SansAmp-Classic-Original-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Tech-21-SansAmp-Classic-Original\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Tech-21-SansAmp-Classic-Original\/1K82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tech 21 SansAmp Classic pedal<\/a><\/strong> sees more prominent usage than the ProCo Rat; it was the main distortion utilised throughout the <em>In Utero <\/em>tour. Kurt used this pedal with almost all the dials turned up to the max, which infuses the guitar tone with an unprecedented level of destruction.<\/p><p>The SansAmp Classic also comes with characteristic switches too, which allows you to fine-tune the nuance and overall tonality of the pedal. Kurt had the first three and last two on, which includes both mid-boosts and closer miking for more presence from the pedal.<\/p><p>Finally, the Electro Harmonix EchoFlanger was used by Cobain in the studio for <em>In Utero<\/em>. It's also\u00a0present in the solo to \u201cHeart-Shaped Box\u201d and in the whole of \u201cScentless Apprentice\u201d.<\/p><p>The pedal did appear under a couple of different names, as the same circuitry appears in the Electro-Harmonix PolyChorus which also spent some time on Kurt\u2019s board.<\/p><p>It was one of the integral components behind the composition of their third album, and the reason Kurt had two was that during its initial use, the Echo Flanger broke and had to be sent for repair.
