The Korg KingKorg synth was released in 2013, and now, just over 10 years later, the brand have launched a new version: the Korg KingKorg Neo, new for NAMM 2024.
An overview of the KingKorg Neo
The Korg KingKorg Neo synthesizer offers a rich sonic palette through its XMT virtual analog sound engine. This technology allows you to effortlessly shape stage-ready tones without the complexity of extensive oscillator adjustments.
With a wide array of preset algorithms, the synthesizer covers everything from classic sawtooth and square waves to intricate noise patterns and PCM/DWGS sounds, catering to a range of musical tastes.
Designed for live performances, the Favourites function on the KingKorg Neo streamlines access to preferred sounds. You can assign up to 40 programs to eight category favourite buttons, ensuring seamless transitions between desired presets with a single touch.
This is especially beneficial for musicians who require quick access to specific synth, lead, or bass sounds during performances.
The synthesizer’s filter section is at the heart of its sonic character, offering a flexible array of powerful filters for precise tone-shaping. From essential analog modelling filter types to iconic ones from the ’70s and ’80s, the KingKorg Neo provides a diverse range of options.
These filters, capable of self-oscillation with increased resonance, open up possibilities for creating anything from ethereal textures to resonant tones.
Of course, there’s the gooseneck microphone and vocoder capabilities, featuring a sophisticated 16-band filter that rivals dedicated vocoder machines. The vocoder capabilities extend beyond classic tones, allowing you to craft unique sounds by adjusting filter frequency, level, pan, and utilising the formant shift function.
The Timbre B as a modulator offers an alternative to traditional microphone input, enabling seamless blending of the vocoder effect with the synth sound.
Enhancing the sound further, the KingKorg Neo provides three master effect slots, each offering six distinctive effect types. The PRE FX, MOD FX, and REV/DELAY slots allow musicians to customise their sound with effects like distortion, phaser, chorus, and ambient reverbs. The dedicated controls for each slot make adjusting and selecting effects straightforward.
Innovative features like the Virtual Patch system bring classic synthesizer patching into the digital age. With six Virtual Patch assignments available for each timbre, you can connect control signals to key sound parameters, allowing for intricate modulation and a deeper exploration of sound-shaping.
