The Gear4music Guide to Busking – Get Outdoors This Summer!

03/06/2021

If you’re a musician and you’ve decided it’s time for people to hear your sound, busking is a great way to gain exposure, build confidence, and sharpen your performance skills.

It might seem daunting to stand in front of strangers in your local town centre and perform, but it can help shake off stage fright and might even earn you a bit of money from passers-by. But before you hit the streets, you need to get your setup right.

The amplifier or speakers, microphone, and instruments you use will shape your sound, and it’s important that this sound is crisp, clear, and loud as you’ll be competing with lots of background noise. Your busking equipment should also be easy to set up and use without any technical issues. That doesn’t mean spending loads of money. It’s about knowing what to look for and choosing kit that works for you.

Summer is the perfect time to bring your music to the streets, so we’ve put together this handy guide to get you started. We’ll cover the key busking equipment you’ll need, give you some top product recommendations, and offer our helpful tips for getting started with your act.

What is busking?

Busker with Everse8Busking is a performance in a public space for voluntary donations from passers-by. It has been around for ages, with evidence of street performers being around even in ancient history.

Modern-day buskers frequent town centres and places with a high public presence – this is a great way to start performing in front of others and gain good exposure. Some buskers also stream their performances live for their digital audiences on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitch.

You don’t need to be famous or signed to a label – and that’s the beauty of it. Busking is open to anyone with the confidence to perform and the ability to create a moment worth stopping for.

For many, it’s a stepping stone to bigger gigs, a way to practice in front of a live audience, or simply a fun and spontaneous way to perform.

If you’re a musician and want to start busking, it’s worth getting a portable amplifier to help your instrument cut through to passing crowds. You might also want a PA speaker so you can plug in a microphone, project your voice clearly, and even add vocal effects.

Some instrument amps include mic inputs, while many portable PA systems are built to handle multiple mics and instruments, ideal if you’re performing as a duo.

How do I start busking?

A singer performing at an outdoor gigSetting up a busking spot is easier than you might think. Here are things you need to do before you start:

Check local rules

Some local councils require you to apply for a permit, others may even require a visit from an official. Don’t take the chance and just turn up to busk – you may be asked to move on.

Get your gear together

Make sure your equipment is portable, reliable, and suited to your setup.

Sure, you can go busking with an acoustic instrument and your voice. However, the streets can be surprisingly noisy, and you’ll want to make sure you can be heard.

The easiest way to get amplified is with a battery-powered solution, and this is where our guide will help you. From compact amplifiers to battery-powered PA systems, these self-contained devices are perfect for performing on the streets.

Plan your set

Hone your act. Make sure you have a great setlist of material and you’re well-practised. About 30 minutes’ worth of music is a great starting point for your first busking trip. Keep things varied and be ready to adapt based on your audience.

Pick a good spot

Look for areas that are likely to get busy but have enough space for people to gather. Avoid setting up too close to other buskers, shop entrances, or residential areas. If it’s a busy town or city, get there early to secure your spot. Loud and proud? Choose a high street with lots of people. Quiet and intimate? Seek a more relaxed location.

If you’re in a popular town on a nice day, chances are there will be other buskers too. You should find a spot where you can perform comfortably and not compete directly. Also, don’t hog a spot for too long – 30 minutes is a great guide if there are a lot of musicians around.

Set up clearly and professionally

A man setting up his busking equipmentMake sure your gear is set up neatly and safely. Keep cables tidy and your area organised so people feel comfortable stopping to watch. Having a sign with your name and social media handle can also help people find you later.

Be presentable and polite

It goes without saying that a friendly smile and respectful attitude can go a long way. Being considerate of the public and local businesses can only do you favours!

Collect donations properly

Leave your guitar case, hat, or a small tip jar open and visible. Some buskers also use signs or QR codes for digital tips.

Know the rules about selling

You’re allowed to busk in public and accept donations, but if you want to sell CDs or merch, you’ll usually need a street trading licence. Always check with your local authority to avoid fines.

How to power busking equipment

When you’re performing outdoors, access to mains power isn’t guaranteed, so choosing the right type of gear is important…

Acoustic instruments (no power needed)

If you’re playing an acoustic guitar, hand percussion, or just singing without amplification, you don’t need any power at all. This is the most lightweight and low-maintenance option, but it limits how far your sound will travel. Acoustic setups can work especially well in quieter spots like covered walkways, indoor markets, or sheltered spaces.

Full PA systems (mains power required)

Larger setups with higher output may need to be plugged in. These are better suited to planned events where power is available, such as street festivals, organised markets, or private venues. They offer more control over your sound, but you’re limited to locations with access to electricity.

To power a full PA system, you could use a generator, but these will often be noisy and heavy, which is not ideal for busking in public spaces. You could also use a powerful portable battery, but they will also be weighty, and large PA systems may drain them quickly.

Battery-powered gear

The crème de la crème of busking setups: battery-powered amps and PA speakers. These are portable pieces of kit run on built-in rechargeable batteries and are ideal for street performances because they offer good sound projection without needing a plug socket. Make sure your battery is fully charged before heading out, and keep a spare if possible. For many buskers, this is the best balance of portability and performance.
