Nickel Silver Body With Sterling Silver Headjoint

The Sterling Silver headjoint provides a more centered sound for a wide range of performers. It holds notes well and is extremely reliable with a greater depth of sound. Nickel silver is generally thought to have a fatter low end which can be good for beginners. The combination of the two in this flute provides quality where it counts and an interesting tonal blend.

Modern Powell Scale

A flute's scale has a huge effect on intonation and balance. The placement and size of the tone holes are the primary determinants of the scale. Sonaré concert flute bodies include the renowned Modern Powell Scale. They are produced at Powell’s Maynard, Massachusetts, workshop, using the same patented Zinki™ technology used to produce Powell’s professional gold flutes.

Handmade Headjoint

The famous Powell Sound derives primarily from the quality headjoint and the Modern Powell Scale. All Sonaré flutes include headjoints which are handmade at Powell’s Maynard workshop. The men and women crafting these headjoints are all accomplished flutists whose knowledge and expertise allows them to cut headjoints to the highest performance standard.

The Signature headjoint used on the Powell 501 flute fuses the lip plate of the Soloist style in combination with a specially designed wall to produce a relatively free blowing headjoint with the “Powell Sound.”

Elgiloy Springs

Elgiloy® is a non-magnetic Cobalt-Chromium-Nickel-Molybdenum alloy with a unique combination of very high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and high fatigue strength. Elgiloy is highly resistant to stress corrosion and cracking. As a result it's the alloy of choice in the most demanding environments.

Patented Zinki Tone Hole Extrusion

The traditional process for extruding tone holes generally involves at least 3 separate steps, each one involving a different setup on a different machine. Powell’s Zinki technology delivers the pulling ball from the outside of the flute tube, rather than pre-loading it on an arbor inside the flute tube. The result is a highly accurate tone hole with little if any rippling on the tube. The last step in Zinki is to “kiss” the top of the tone hole with a diamond facing tool to make sure that it is level, ensuring quality and consistency.

About The Sonaré Series

Not so far back the flutist had a choice - spend a little on a student flute that might not last and could restrict development, or spend an awful lot on a professional flute. The Sonaré flutes offer a compromise - a professional, handmade headjoint on an intermediate flute body. This gives the player quality where it counts at an accessible price.

About Powell Flutes

Since their founding in 1927, Powell Flutes has been a leader among makers of professional flutes and piccolos. Verne Powell opened his first shop at 295 Huntington Ave in Boston Massachusetts, just down the street from the famous Boston Symphony Hall. The first 10 flutes made by Mr. Powell were owned by some of the most famous American flutists of the time, including William Kincaid, Arthur Lora and John Wummer. By 1930 Powell flutes were part of major orchestras in Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, New York and Philadelphia.

Today the workshop is in Maynard, a small town just outside Boston. The shop occupies one floor of a building that was originally a woolen mill. Much like the workers who originally occupied the building, the flute makers continue the New England tradition of craftsmanship and a devotion to making the highest quality instruments. Every day they employ a strategic combination of hand crafting, technology and a little bit of magic to create instruments which free the flutist to explore their musicality.

Includes Accessories

Every Sonaré model includes an elegant French style case, nylon case cover, swab stick, gauze swab and polishing cloth.
