Endless Rotary Knobs

The TipTop Audio Trigger Riot is equipped with endless rotary knobs for Tempo and its 16-knob 4x4 matrix. The Tempo control can be found just under the LED screen of the Trigger Riot, and is used for adjustments in BPM, the internal counter cycle start and end points, and a variety of other utility functions such as clock source, rate, and beat sync. The 16 control knobs on the module's 4x4 matrix are used for setting the variety of parameters for each clock divider and effects.

Mode Button

The Trigger Riot features a multitude of high quality buttons for setting adjustment and toggling. One of these is the Mode button. This switches between the following parameters for each division;

  • Divide: Sets the clock division
  • Step: Allows setting of a single trigger on a given count
  • Probability: Sets the probability that a trigger will fire
  • Speed: Sets the time base in internal clocks
  • Clock shift: Delays the division by full clocks
  • Time Shift: Delays the division by fractions of a clock
  • Pulse Width: Duty cycle of the trigger/gate from 0 percent to 100 percent

Presets, Banks, & Beat Sync

The Trigger Riot's Matrix and Independent modes feature four presets, for a total of 16 memories in four banks. Holding a preset button will save that preset to the bank, giving you the ability to rapidly recall it later by quickly pressing the preset button. Presets save patterns, BPM, and any set cycle start and end points. Switching presets will reset the cycle and send a reset pulse on the Reset Out jack to sync with other sequencers.

Four banks contain four presets each. Changing the bank does not change the current preset until a preset button is pressed. The banks have alternate functions when held for setting the preset looping feature, and quantizing preset changes to the beat.

The TipTop Audio Trigger Riot can also quantize manual preset changes to the start of a cycle if the Cycle Start and Cycle End have been set. BeatSync Continue can be enabled by holding the B1/BeatSync button. In this mode, presets are changed without resetting the internal counter or sending a reset signal. beatSync also controls the mutes as well as preset changes.

Tap Tempo

The Trigger Riot features a handy Tap Tempo button. Pressing the button once will display a "tAP" message, enabling you to tap your desired tempo by pressing the button twice more in time. This new tempo will show on the display. You can also enter steps using the Mute/Sel buttons. By holding the Tap Tempo button, a "tAPS" message will be displayed. Single presses of the Mute/Sel buttons will place a step at that beat when CYCE is not 0. These taps are quantized to the previous 16th note, and the trigger isn't fired until the next cycle. The channels will not mute in this mode.

Matrix/Independent Switchable

TipTop Audio's Trigger Riot allows to to select between the default Matrix mode, where the rows and columns will interact with each other, and Independent mode. In Independent mode, each output on a row or column can have its own setting. In this mode, the Mute/Sel buttons are held down and the desired knob can be turned to set parameter values. Changing modes will not carry over any settings, but doubles the number of preset settings stored in the Trigger Riot itself.

Clock Input & Output

  • Clock IN: You can insert a 0 - 5V trigger or gate source, allowing you drive the Trigger Riot when the external clock is selected. The rate for the incoming clock signal can be selected by the ("DIN") function. The two rates are 1/16th notes or 24 PPQ DIN Sync ("DIN").
  • Clock OUT: This outputs each clock based on the BPM and Clock setting. The two rates are 1/16th notes, or 24 PPQ DAW or DIN Sync.
  • Reset IN: Resets the internal count to the cycle start.
  • Reset OUT: Triggered when the internal count is reset either by the cycle setting or by an external trigger.

Step, Probability, & Speed Modes

  • Step Mode: In Step Mode, single clock counts can be set to trigger on a given inputThe value ranges from 0, which is off, to 255 clocks, and the value is constrained by the Internal Cycle vlaue. Steps can also be manually entered using Tap Step mode. After entering the Steps, they can be edited using the encoders.
  • Probability Mode: Using probability will add some randomness to the triggering of divisions. The values range from 0 percent or always off, to 100 percent or always on. A setting of 50 percent results in a random "coin toss." The default is 100 percent.
  • Speed Mode: Speed is the number of internal clock ticks the division is based on. The Trigger Riot's internal clock runs at 96 PPQ (1/384 note) and the default clock is 24 ticks, or 1/16 note (one quarter note is equal to 96 clock ticks divided by 4, resulting in 24 ticks). Any subdivision from 2 to 96 is available, and very subtle rotating patterns can emerge from slightly offset Speed settings. Speed can be viewed as a clock multiplier.

Adjustable Pulse Width

Pulse width is the length of time the output pulse remains high (5V) and is a percentage of the division. Pulse width is calculated based on the Division plus Clock and Time Shift, so shifted divisions will have proportionally shorter pulse widths. Setting the pulse width to 0 will set the pulse width to a single internal clock cycle no matter what the division is, which is useful for drum triggering.

Synchronisation

The TipTop Audio Trigger Riot features multiple sync options. One of these is SyncBus. SyncBus is a unique synchronization standard that TipTop have developed for syncing their sequencers with incredible timing and intelligence. The SyncBus uses high speed parallel data communication to achieve this, and is the recommended method for syncing multiple Trigger Riot modules. Multiple devices are connected using a special ribbon cable on the back of the module. This carries clock, reset, preset, and a Boss signal to determine which device is the master. The Trigger Riot can also be synced to a computer based DAW.
