Acoustic Guitars - Things to Consider
What is an Acoustic Guitar?
An acoustic guitar is a stringed musical instrument that is played by picking the strings with fingers or a plectrum. The vibration of the strings on the acoustic guitar creates the sound, which is then made louder acoustically inside the guitar's hollow body or sound box.
Body shape and wood type affect how acoustic guitars sound. One of the most common shapes is the ‘dreadnought’, which provides a full-bodied sound with great volume.
Which Acoustic Guitar is Best for Beginners?
The best acoustic guitar is the one that will make the owner want to pick it up and play it.
In addition to that, ease of use is an important consideration. The two biggest contributing factors to ease of use are the shape and size of the body; a full-size Jumbo might be difficult for a child to play for example. From there, consider the action of the guitar. The “action” is how far the strings are away from the fretboard. A high action tends to be harder to play and low action easier to play.
It’s always important to make sure you like the sound the guitar makes. Once you consider the sound and then the practical elements, you’ll be able to make a good decision if the acoustic guitar you’re looking at is right for you.
What are the Different Types of Acoustic Guitar?
There is (and we sell) a massive range of acoustic guitars. The major differences in acoustic guitars are string type, left and right handed, acoustic, and electro-acoustic. An electro-acoustic is basically an acoustic guitar with a pick-up in it. This means it can be hooked up to an acoustic guitar amp to have the sound amplified to much higher volumes, which is ideal if you’re performing live.
It’s likely when you imagine an acoustic guitar, you’re thinking of a steel string guitar. These can be played fingerstyle or with a plectrum, they have a great deal of projection and volume. The strings are made of steel, so in the early days be prepared for a bit of wear and tear on the fingers!
Nylon string guitars are commonly referred to as Classical Guitars or Spanish Guitars. They are usually played fingerstyle and are notably easier to fret as the strings are softer and under less tension. They also tend to have a flatter and wider fretboard than steel string guitars.
