Guitarist Steve Stevens Gets a Visit From sE Electronics
Steve Stephens talks to sE Electronics about working in his private studio with the VR1 Passive Ribbon Microphone.

Guitarist Steve Stevens has recorded with Michael Jackson and Robert Palmer but is best known for his work with Billy Idol. You'll have definitely heard him play before, he worked on the Beverley Hills Cop and Top Gun soundtracks with composer Harold Faltermeyer.

Fellow guitarist, Pete Thornton, first suggested that Stevens use the VR1 mic. "Pete's got impeccable ears," says Stevens. "If he says you should check something out, it's going to be really really good. I've got nothing but good things to say about the microphone."

More of a songwriter than engineer, the VR1 is ideal as Stevens can set it up and it's the quickest way he can begin recording when he's in the studio by himself, which is often. "I have other ribbon mics, and they require - for me at least - exact placement. Pete said a selling point of the VR1 was that you could put it anywhere on any speaker and it would sound really, really good."

Having found exactly what he needs in a microphone, it was time for Stevens to put it to good use. The bright tone of the VR1 gives it an edge over other ribbon mics, as a result more of the track recorded with the VR1 tends to end up in the mix.

Steven uses a combination of two mics on his guitar cab, the VR1 and an industry standard dynamic mic. "With the Voodoo, I really end up favouring it in the mix. It's a bit more forgiving than that other mic."
