Young American musicians head to Ireland for folk competition
A music competition that celebrates Irish folk music will play host to two young American musicians who will be travelling across the Atlantic to represent their country.
Keegan Loesel, 11, who plays the tin whistle, and Alexander Weir, 12, who plays the fiddle, were the top two finalists in the North American regional competitions, reported Daily Local news.
The boys will be taking their music instruments with them on a trip of a lifetime to perform in the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann, the Festival of Music in August.
Loesel, who first got into Irish music after hearing a CD at his house, told the online news provider that he was looking forward to visiting Ireland where "lots of his ancestors" were from.
He added that it would be good to "meet other people who play this music".
Weir meanwhile started with Irish dancing first, although his music ability came from his interest in the violin from an early age. The fiddle was a music instrument he found "much more fun to play".
One of the most famous Irish ballads is Danny Boy, which was written by Frederick Weatherly, an Englishman. Many Irish Americans consider it an anthem.
