YouTube signs deal with NMPA
Ever since YouTube became a phenomenon on the world wide web it has been hit with various legal challenges as the rest of the world began to catch up with the changing dynamics of how media is accessed and distributed and started challenging the website.
Another milestone has been achieved with the announcement of a new deal between the video-sharing website and the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), ending a four-year legal battle over rights and royalties.
NMPA, which represents over 3,000 independent music publishers, had taken YouTube to court over the payment of royalties when artists' music was viewed online.
This new deal means YouTube will pay royalties based on the number of times music by NMPA members is viewed on the website.
David Israelite, NMPA's president and chief executive, said: "We are now going to be business partners in these videos, and we all get to share in that revenue."
This new development will not affect the existing licensing contracts the Google-owned website has with EMI Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment.
