Yorkshire piano teacher and elephant duet becomes internet sensation

The elephant was intrigued by the rendition of Maple Leaf Rag.

There are a number of famous combinations that spring to mind when thinking about duets; Simon and Garfunkel, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and even Baloo the Bear and King Louis from the Jungle Book.

However, these can all move over as a former music teacher at Ayton Friends School in North Yorkshire has formed an unlikely partnership with an elephant at a sanctuary near Bangkok, Thailand.

The Northern Echo reported that Paul Barton was playing the famous Scott Joplin song Maple Leaf Rag at the Asian animal sanctuary to provide therapy for the native creatures.

A ten-year-old elephant, named Peter, then decided against its evening trip to the river for a bath to partner with Mr Barton for an impromptu duet.

Mr Barton, who teaches piano in Thailand, told the news provider: "I suddenly felt something strange sucking the back of my head and had an unexpected duet partner. I think Peter got it confused with Joplin's Stoptime Rag."

The video has become an internet sensation with over 60,000 views on YouTube and only time will tell whether this unlikely combo will become the next Simon and Garfunkel.
