Yamaha jazz scholars up for Mercury Prize
Posted on 28 Jul 2010 09:25 to category : Band / Celebrity News

One of the acts in the running for this year's Mercury Prize has two former Yamaha jazz scholars in their ranks.
The Kit Downes Trio contains Kit Downes on the piano and Calum Gourlay on the double bass and the pair are also joined by drummer James Maddren.
Yamaha has provided consistent support to the band throughout their fledging career, inviting them to record on its New Jazz Sessions CD, as well as providing a grand piano when they made their debut album Golden.
Mike Ketley, Yamaha's senior director, said: "We wish to congratulate the Kit Downes Trio who have demonstrated how these innovative scholarships demonstrate our commitment to promote the playing of jazz music."
The scholarship scheme has been running since 2007 and has the backing of Classic FM, Jazzwise, PPL and the All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group.
It offers a £1,000 bursary to each winner so they can develop their skills and musical studies.
