Would-be drummers told to "listen well"
Posted on 9th Apr 2009 15:32 to category Tips and advice
Top rock drummer Josh Freese has told those looking to learn the drums to make sure they listen carefully to as much music as they can.
In an interview with MusicRadar, the man who has worked with Guns N' Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Sting and The Vandals during his career recommended that beginners "listen well" to a wide range of music, analyse what works and what does not, and then set about seeing if they can recreate some of the parts.
"You can give yourself an incredible musical education in the privacy of your own bedroom if you just open up your ears and your mind," he remarked.
While Freese endorses diversity, he did, however, say that he does not really listen to jazz, as it is not a genre of music he is particularly in to.
Freese told Guitar Center in 2007 that he first became interested in music when he was about eight years old and started studying and learning the drums from the age of nine.
