Watch: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees Announced
The nominees will be put to a vote, with the most popular earning the right to be counted amongst the greatest performers ever.
Nirvana look to be the most likely to be inducted, they share the chance with Chic, Deep Purple, N.W.A and rapper LL Cool J.
Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after their first record has been released.
Other nominees this year include Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Meters, The Replacements, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, Link Wray, YES and The Zombies.
They must be artists who have significantly contributed to rock and roll, influencing other artists and making their mark.
Each year, around five to seven performers are included into the Hall of Fame. This year's nominees will join the likes of Donna Summer, The Beastie Boys, Tom Waits, Sam Cooke and AC/DC.
