Violinist Nicola Benedetti will visit Venezuela to deliver expert music classes to poor children on the El Sistema Scheme.

Travelling to Caracas in July, Benedetti will take part in the scheme that inspired the Big Noise Project in Sterling’s Raploch area, where she has been working as a “big music sister”.

Launched in 2008, the Big Noise Project teaches up to 300 children at Raploch Primary School how to play string instruments. Like El Sistema, which aims to create better opportunities for children in the barrios, the project aims to better the lives of participants, instilling them with confidence and encouraging them to work together.

A recent report commissioned by the Scottish government, which was published in March, found that the project was having a “positive impact on children’s personal and social development” which included “self esteem, a sense of achievement and pride and improved social skills".

Speaking to the BBC, the Scottish violinist said: "It is very moving for someone like me. I have always dreamed of our communities experiencing the infectious joy of playing music together."

While in Venezuela, Benedetti, a board member of the charity Sistema Scotland, will perform with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra.
