Violin-maker wins award for his skills
A man who makes violins for a living has won an award to celebrate his skill as a master craftsman.
Christoph Gotting, from Hampshire, won a National Masters of Crafts award for his specialism in hand-making music instruments, reported the BBC.
Mr Gotting, 63, spends 140 hours on each violin, taking the time needed to perfect the instrument with a true artisan's touch.
In total, he and his assistant make around ten bespoke violins a year.
Originally from Germany, Mr Gotting spent 21 years restoring old classics while learning the trade secrets of a craft that extends back to the golden age of violin making.
It is a craft that has become marginalised in today's world.
Speaking to the BBC he said: "These disappeared in around 1780. Nothing was written down. To understand and to get close to it, you have to understand what went on before Stradivarius' time."
Violins are made up of a number of separate sections, which are brought together to form its unique sound.
Wood grown at a high altitude is preferred, but it is the chemical composition of the varnish that is essential in maximising its full potential as a finely-tuned music instrument.
A rare Stradivarius violin is to be sold off at an auction on June 20th 2011, with all its proceeds going to the Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.
