Violin destroyed 'on PayPal's orders'

A French violin has been destroyed after PayPal ordered the buyer to do so.
PayPal 'orders' violin's destruction
The US-based e-commerce business PayPal has come under criticism for allegedly ordering one of its customers to destroy an antique musical instrument – in order to be eligible for a refund.

It came to light after the blog Registry got access to an email from Erica, who was the original owner of the violin.

In the email, she explains that she sold a French violin for $2,500 (approximately £1,600) but the buyer disputed its authenticity.

Instead of returning the product as is customary, Erica alleges that PayPal ordered the buyer to destroy the musical instrument.

They somehow deemed the violin as 'counterfeit' even though there is no such thing in the violin world," she writes.

"The buyer was proud of himself, so he sent me a picture of the destroyed violin … it is beyond me why PayPal simply didn't have the violin returned to me."

PayPal responded by issuing a statement.

"While we cannot talk about this particular case due to PayPal's privacy policy, we carefully review each case, and in general we may ask a buyer to destroy counterfeit goods if they supply signed evidence from a knowledgeable third party that the goods are indeed counterfeit," a spokesperson for the company said.
