Violin aboard the Titanic to be auctioned
The instrument is believed to have belonged to bandmaster Wallace Hartley who, along with eight members of his orchestra, sacrificed their own lives to keep others calm when the ship was sinking.
Titanic experts Henry Aldridge & Son, based in Wiltshire, are expecting the violin to fetch a record amount in the hundred of thousands of pounds once the final scientific tests are carried out to check its authenticity.
The vessel was dubbed as the "unsinkable ship" when it left for its maiden voyage between Southampton and New York but disaster struck when the Titanic collided with an iceberg on April 14th 1912.
The ship went down with well over 1,500 souls, and should the violin prove the very instrument that was owned and played by Wallace Hartley it will have managed to survive when so many others perished.
