Venezuela's newest prison benefits from orchestral project

Venezuela's newest prison is seeing marked improvement in the behaviour of inmates who engage with music instruments as part of the prison orchestra.

The prison orchestra project in one of Venezuela's newest prisons has been such a success that it has led to drastic improvements in behaviour from inmates involved in the musical activities.

Coro Prison in western Venezuela has introduced the orchestra programme in a bid to improve the lives of its inmates.

The project helps teach prisoners how to play various music instruments including the double bass, the saxophone, tuba and violin.

It has been so successful that it is one of the most popular daily activities in the prison, reported the BBC.

The project stems from the El Sistema music programme, which was established 36 years ago.

It is best known for working with children from poor backgrounds and introducing music into their lives.

Lenin Mora, a human rights lawyer and youth orchestra alumnus, came up with the idea to expand its work into prisons.

Prisoners are required to demonstrate good behaviour before they can join the orchestra and it is clearly having a massive impact.

Elisaul Salas, a 23-year-old inmate, told the BBC: "I feel great when I'm playing, very proud and also it's a very big responsibility for me.

"To be the first violin is a very big responsibility, and if they had the confidence in me to choose me for this role, it makes me want to keep moving forward."
