Underworld with join forces with filmmaker Danny Boyle to deliver the opening ceremony of the games.
Danny Boyle and Underworld to work together again
Underworld have been announced as music directors for the opening ceremony London 2012 Olympic Games.

It will reunite the dance duo with their long-time creative partner the filmmaker Danny Boyle.

Famous for their 90s hit Born Slippy, which not only became the anthem for Boyle's cult film Trainspotting but the song that defined a generation of disenchanted young people, the decision has surprised many people.

Together with Boyle, Underworld – Karl Hyde and Rick Smith – will deliver a three-hour extravaganza that aims to be the best ever in the long and illustrious history of the games.

"It's a great honour to be asked to do this and one we're taking very seriously," Hyde told the BBC.

"It's certainly not something we'll get the chance to do again."

Boyle added that Underworld were more than just electronic pioneers with a broad taste in music that would surprise most people.

"With Frankenstein we really saw how far we could take a broader approach than we'd used together on the films," said Boyle, referring to the fact they have produced music to his stage version of Mary Shelley's classic gothic novel.

It comes on the back of news that Elbow have been selected by the BBC to record their soundtrack to coverage of the Olympic Games.
