Ukulele legend Bill Tapia has died
Bill Tapia, a maestro on the music instrument, hailed from Hawaii and had jammed with a coterie of big name stars like Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley and Louis Armstrong.
Tapia, who had been strumming the ukulele from the age of seven, kicked off his career in 1918, providing soldier in the First World War some much needed entertainment.
"Widely believed to be the oldest performing musician ever to take the stage, jazz ukulele legend Bill Tapia is dead," read the message on his official website.
"With a career that spanned over 90 years, he was the last living link to the earliest days of both jazz and the ukulele as a popular instrument."
Not only was he a legend on the once-again popular ukulele, he was also a very proficient banjo and guitar player.
Tapia was inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame in 2004 for his long and celebrated contribution to the art of the instrument.
Interestingly enough, though a seasoned player, he would go on to release his first CD at the age of 96.
