Ukulele Returns to Fashion as Sales Boom
Musical instrument retailers across the UK are celebrating the Ukulele's return to cool, as sales of the four stringed mini guitar boom.
Ahead of this month's Musical Instrument Retail Conference (MIRC) in London, 180 music shops were surveyed with 42 per cent saying the ukulele had seen the biggest rise in popularity in the last year.
31 per cent stated that keyboards had seen the largest growth, and 16 per cent for acoustic guitars.
Much of the instruments meteoric rise to fame has been due to nu-folk acts such as Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale and Fleet Foxes exploiting the vintage cool of the instrument.
Although originally from Hawaii, the ukulele became known in Britain due to comedy entertainer George Formby, known for the tongue in cheek masterpiece "When I?m Cleaning Windows" played on a banjo ukulele.
A spokesman for MIRC, Ronnie Dungan, said "the ukulele is a bit of phenomenon. Retailers are reporting massive sales.
"They're easy to get hold of, cheap to buy and more straightforward to learn than a lot of instruments.
"It's encouraging people of all ages to take up an instrument for the first time, which is fantastic because there's nothing more fun and rewarding."
Costing from as little as £9.99 for a Ukulele by Gear4music, the instrument as seen as an affordable, fun and highly accessible gateway to music for young and old alike.
