U2 Are Being Sued For Accusations Over Plagiarism

U2 are being sued for 5 million dollars after the alleged plagiarism of Paul Rose's 1989 song 'Nae Slapping' on their 1991 single 'The Fly'. The lead single off their revered album "Achtung Baby" cemented U2's status as international heavy hitters with a reinvigorated and 'fresh' new sound. The lawsuit lead by Rose accuses the band of hearing his song whilst visiting Island Records studio back in 1989 when 'Nae Slapping' was making its original debut. Upon signing a new deal with the Island Records, U2 were on the hunt for a cutting edge sound that would set them apart from the established zeitgeist of the era.

The Lawsuit makes specific reference to this, noting:

" Although perhaps the most popular rock band in the worlds in the 1980s, by that decade's end the band felt in need of reinvigoration. "

Despite acknowledging the plagiarism at the time, Rose was apprehensive about any repercussions that his accusations may have on his fledgling career as a guitarist.

A report that was taken from the NY Post regarding the circumstances of Rose's lawsuit stated:

" Rose's lawyer, Thomas Mullaney, said his client is only coming forward now-some 26 years later-because he was just starting out at the time of the alleged theft and he didn't want to ruin his career. Rose also only recently found an ex-Island Records employee who will corroborate his story, including that 'Nae Slappin' was often played at Island records when U2 was looking for inspiration of 'Achtung Baby, Mullaney said."

A virtuoso guitarist originally from Newcastle, Paul Rose has established himself as one of the leading lights in the guitar industry. Whilst primarily a rock guitarist his playing touches on blues, country, jazz and folk. With a list of 12 solo albums behind him, Paul continues to reign as one of the supreme voices of the modern guitar virtuoso.
