Two Beatles, David Bowie and Simon Cowell are "New Elizabethans"
The title of "New Elizabethan" has been given to a group of 60 people "who define" the 60 years in which Elizabeth II has been on the throne, in celebration of her Jubilee. They are to be the subject of a series of Radio 4 programmes starting on the 11th of June.
Besides Lennon and McCartney, Bowie and Cowell, the composer Benjamin Britten is another music-related name set to pop up on the show.
Tony Hall, The Royal Opera House's chief executive, helped to choose the 60 New Elizabethans as part of a panel, while James Naughtie is going to pen profiles of the group and host the new show in which his work will feature.
"Together, their stories - the connections they make with others and the trends and moments of drama they represent - make up a glittering mosaic of this country in the second half of the 20th century. What a bunch!" he said.
The Beatles are behind massively well known hits such as Yesterday and She Loves You. David Bowie is known for singles such as Life on Mars and Starman.
