Turntable FM closes service to users outside of the US
An online music software company has been forced to shut down its operations for users outside of the US.
Turntable FM is a service that allows users to create their "own DJ room" or hang out in other DJ rooms created by other users.
Like other social networking media websites it is big on interactivity.
However, there has been issue about the complex nature of licensing constraints within this new service, namely the implications of interactivity and the copyright of songs.
Turntable FM is allowed to continue in the US because it is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which allows it – and other websites – operate without the need to secure deals with record labels.
The management at the company over the weekend posted a message on their Twitter page: "To all our international friends, we're sorry you can't use Turntable right now due to licensing constraints. Trying to get you back in asap."
Spotify recently signed a licensing deal with Universal Music Group to stream songs in its catalogue.
The company has now secured deals with most of the biggest record labels in the US, with its sights now on the Warner Music Group.
