Titanic violin on display in Wiltshire
The instrument is now known to have belonged to bandmaster Wallace Hartley who instructed his musicians to keep playing as the iconic ship was sinking to keep passengers calm, Western Daily Press reports.
It was presented to experts at Aldridge's in Devizes after a seven-year study to check that it was the original piece salvaged from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean and specialists have now confirmed it is genuine.
The violin was not part of a Titanic auction held at Held Aldridge & Son on Saturday (April 20th) but a letter penned by Hartley was and sold for a staggering £93,000.
It was estimated that the artefact would fetch around £50,000 but a crazed bidding war saw the sale price soar and soar.
Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, said: "Clearly, this letter, which mentions the band and alludes to the wealth on-board the ship – implying that some of it would make its way to the band in the form of gratuities – elevates this letter to perhaps the most desirable and important on-board Titanic letter extant."
