Titanic band leader's violin 'found'
Posted on 31 Jan 2012 10:07 to category : Instruments News

Wallace Hartley and his band of musicians have been celebrated in history for their brave decision to play on as the doomed ship sank after hitting an iceberg on April 15th 1912.
Auctioneer Henry Aldridge & Sons of Devizes has hired experts to examine the musical instrument to ascertain if it really did belong to Hartley.
The case that houses the violin is said to have carved onto it Hartley's initials, whereas the actual instrument has the inscription 'For Wallace on the occasion of our engagement, Maria."
She was his fiancée and it is believed that after his body was found with the violin strapped to him, the instrument was subsequently sent back to her.
Henry Aldridge told the Telegraph: "The owner has not made up their mind if they would want to sell it but I think it is more likely it will go on exhibition if it is proved to be genuine.
"We hope to have a definite answer some time this year. We cannot rush the scientists."
