The XX no live band
Posted on 10th Mar 2010 07:00 to category Music News
The XX never wanted to perform live.
The British indie band said they were initially too shy to play their songs to an audience, and they are still "pretty awkward" onstage, despite having played hundreds of shows and toured across North America.
Producer and multi instrumentalist Jamie Smith said: "I never wanted to perform and was perfectly happy being in the shadows - it was the others who made me do it.
"I'm still pretty awkward - we all are."
The group - which also includes Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim - returned to the stage for the first time this week, since they were struck by the death Romy's father, Barry.
Jamie paid tribute Barry, saying: "Like all our parents, he was a big supporter of the band. Olly and I used to love calling round for Romy at his place because he had a fantastic record collection and speakers in every room and he introduced us to so many new sounds. He was cool dad."
He also said the band's slow and minimal sound wasn't borne from trying to emulate reductionist composers.
He added: "Although we learned about minimalism at school and came to admire guys like Philip Glass and Steve Reich, the real reason we started off playing in this slow, sparse way was because we weren't very proficient."
