The White Stripes confirm split

Electric guitar band The White Stripes are no more.

The White Stripes have confirmed they will no longer be making music in a statement on their official website.

Electric guitar player Jack White and drummer Meg have decided to call time on the group, 13 years after they first got started.

According to the pair, the aim of the split is to preserve what was "beautiful and special" about the band, rather than any artistic differences or health problems.

"The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to," a statement from Jack and Meg said.

However, some of the unreleased live and studio recordings made by the band will be released in the future.

During their time together, Jack and Meg put out six studio albums, beginning with a self-titled debut record.

They went on to enjoy success around the world by bringing out De Stijl, White Blood Cells, Elephant, Get Behind Me Satan and Icky Thump.

Multi-instrumentalist Jack has also been involved with a number of other bands, including The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather.
