Joseph Suk, a renowned master of the violin, has died at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness.

The Czech violinist was respected for his work as a soloist and as the leader of the Prague Quartet and the Suk Trio.

He was also known for his famous family tie to the composer Antonin Dvorak, who was his great granddad.

Such was his mastery of the violin he was trusted with playing delicate music instruments built by Giuseppe Guarneri, Giovanni Battista Guadagnini and Antonio Stradivari.

Antonin Matzner, of the Prague Spring Festival, told Reuters: "He was the best interpreter of Dvorak's violin concert and his chamber compositions...and he also won acclaim for his Mozart and Beethoven creations."

He added that Suk's tone was "distinct among all violinists around the world", which he maintained even into old age.

Over the years, Suk received many awards that recognised his contribution to classical music and the violin itself.

This included the Grand Prix de l'Academie Charles Cros of Paris, which he won six times, the Edison Prize in Netherlands (1972), and the Wiener Floetenuhr from Vienna's Mozart Society (1974).
