The Black Crowes have revealed they took a break from recording for "mental health reasons".

The rockers - who broke up in 2002 before reforming again in 2005 - admitted this time around they made the decision to part ways because they don't want to mess up their success by sticking around for too long.

Frontman Chris Robinson explained: "We called what we did before a hiatus, but that was really more of breaking up the band. Like anything, there was reasons to do it, personal reasons, soulful reasons, mental health reasons. But I think now, it's more like, 'OK, we've been working f***ing hard for five years as well. Let's step away from this.' "

The 'Lions' hitmaker admitted the band - who recently released acoustic double record 'Croweology', which spans their 20-year history - spent two and a half years creating seventh studio album 'Warpaint' because he and guitarist brother Rich Robinson were "stupidly stubborn" and kept arguing.

He told Beatweek magazine: "It did take us two-and-a-half years when we got the band back together to get an album, 'Warpaint', together. We had worked on some demo sessions and we'd worked on some tracks here and there, and they didn't go well at all. I think that's why the summer of 2007 when we found ourselves up in Atlanta and Rich and I finally got on the same page in terms of the material and everything, that's why that was such a big breakthrough in a sense for us.

"But those stupidly stubborn two and a half years there, I mean the fighting part, to be honest, it's like I don't have it in me to be that aggressive and angry over something that is so beautiful to me."
