Teenager can master complex piano pieces by memory alone
A teenager who can't read music can nevertheless listen to a complex piece of classical music and then, from memory, play it back on the piano perfectly.
Samuel Osmond, 19, who is currently studying for his A levels at Cornwall College, has never had a music lesson in his life yet, with his amazing ability to remember long and dynamic pieces of music from composers like Beethoven and Chopin, can play back the music exactly note for note.
The teenager is currently learning one of the most difficult piano compositions ever written, Ballade No.1 in G Minor by Chopin. His music lecturer, Cecil DuValle, is amazed by this given that he and many others have never been able to master this multifaceted piece of music.
Osmond said: "I grew up with music. My mum played and I played guitar for six years. About two years ago I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me - I hear the notes and can memorise them - each individual note."
Mr DuValle believes that Osmond's ability may be the result of an undiagnosed mild form of autism, which is known to give people with the condition exceptional abilities in art, mathematics and memory.
Frederic Chopin, though one of the greatest pianists of his time – and all time in fact – disliked giving large public performances, much preferring small and intimate concerts.
