Swindon Hospital uses CT-Scan to Identify Missing RMS Titanic Violin
Health officials at BMI The Ridgeway Hospital have been trying to unlock the mystery surrounding the sought-after item which was salvaged from the sunken vessel following its maiden voyage.
The violin is thought to have been played by bandmaster Wallace Hartley and has been the subject of much interest from historians. The radiographers have played a major part in authenticating the instrument.
Astrid Little, imaging manager at the Wroughton hospital, explained that they took an innovative approach by using a CT-Scan following extensive research by auction house Henry Aldridge and Son.
"A 3D image of the violin was created from the CT scan, meaning the violin could be examined from the inside. The scan revealed that the original wood was cracked and showed signs of possible restoration," Ms Little added.
The violin is set to feature at a museum in the US later in the month and will then go up for auction in October.
