Sweet Home Alabama 'had to be written on a Fender Stratocaster'

Former Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Ed King has revealed that using a Fender Stratocaster was a vital part of writing the band's most famous hit, Sweet Home Alabama.
He used the guitar when writing the song with the rest of the group back in 1974 and has now told the Birmingham News that it was a key component in the track's sound.
"You can express yourself a number of different ways," King said of the Stratocaster's abilities.
"The Fender's a very vocal guitar."
He added that the rumour the guitar solos in the song came to him in a dream was true, explaining that he always sleeps with a guitar next to his bed in case he is struck by inspiration during the night.
"There are two solos in that song," he said. "Both of them came to me note-for-note in a dream."
Last month, Hank Marvin revealed that his first Fender Stratocaster was bought for him by Cliff Richard, his bandmate in The Shadows, in 1959.
