Studio Monitor & Speaker Placement
Studio monitors are speakers optimised to reduce the effects of your room on the sound being output. They are essential to providing an accurate well balanced mix, and are a must for anyone who wants to get the best from their productions.
An optimum distance to sit from conventional monitors is 1 to 2 metres from their position. The distance between the monitors should be approximately the same distance between one of the monitors and your face in the sitting, listening position. So if you are sat 1.5 metres away from the monitors, they should be 1.5 metres apart.
The monitor speakers should be directed at the halfway point between your furthest forward listening position and your furthest backward position.
It is also important to make sure that the speakers are aligned with your ears at the same height. The tweeter should be aimed at your ears for the most accurate sound.
The surface that the monitors are positioned on is also important. Simply setting speakers down on a desk can work. However, if the speaker is fully resting on the desk many vibrations are transmitted through the speaker bottom, spoiling otherwise accurate monitoring.
Studio Monitor Speaker Stands, are an ideal solution to this, giving you a stable, coherent surface to position your monitors on. Alternatively rubber feet, as sometimes used on tables and chairs in kitchens, can be a cheaper compromise.Posted on 20 Mar 2009 09:00 to category : Tips and advice
