Students who play a music instrument do better at school
Students who learn to play a music instrument or join a school choir are more likely to do better academically than students who don't, according to a new study.
The study also found that students who were musically involved were more likely to have much more successful careers than students who went without music, reports the Herald Sun.
Spanning over eight countries and involving more than 24,000 children and young people, the report revealed that music was an important factor in aiding the development of vital skills.
Gary McPherson, Ormond Professor and director of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne, told the news provider that the findings of the report showed that music in general education was "pivotal to a complete and holistic education".
He added: "While kids often don't value music as much as other subjects they study, those who undertake instrument classes or take singing lessons do better in other subjects and boast better verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills."
Elsewhere, another recent study from Northwestern University in Illinois revealed the importance of music in wellbeing and health showing that those who play a music instrument from an early age are more likely to have improved hearing and enhanced memory in later life than those who do not.
