Stradivarius violin sells at auction for £9.8 million
A rare Stradivarius violin has set a new world record when it was sold at auction for £9.8 million.
All proceeds from the auction will go towards disaster relief in Japan, which suffered a terrible earthquake and tsunami earlier this year.
The £9.8 million price for the 1721 Lady Blunt is four times more than the previous record for a Stradivarius violin.
Lady Ann Blunt, the granddaughter of the English poet Lord Byron, was the owner of the music instrument for over 30 years.
The Nippon Music Foundation kindly put up the violin for sale to raise vital cash for its Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.
Speaking at the event, Kazuko Shiomi, the foundation's president, said: "While this violin was very important to our collection, the needs of our fellow Japanese people after the March 11th tragedy have proven that we all need to help, in any way we can.
"The donation will be put to immediate use on the ground in Japan."
It is estimated that there are some 600 violins scattered across the world that were crafted by Antonio Stradivari. If still in good condition they have an exceptional market value.
Stradivari was born in Italy in 1644. His standard of craftsmanship for violins is set to have been of a standard that has never been replaced.
