Stephen Howard praises Gear4music Alto Saxophone in Review
Stephen Howard, leading woodwind instrument expert, has praised the Gear4music Alto Saxophone in a recent review.
Author of the Haynes manual for saxophones, Stephen is considered a true authority on the instrument, and runs a popular and respected woodwind instrument repair and restoration website.
Reviewing the Gear4music Alto Saxophone in Vintage Finish, Stephen was surprised by "how little difference there is "between the Gear4music saxophone and an instrument costing many times as much.
Comparing the instrument to a "student horn from years gone by,"Stephen found that the Gear4music Alto could "kick them firmly into a corner...and then stamp on them."
The Gear4music Alto performed well "straight out of the box" blowing, "right down to a sub-tone low B."
"It's got a nice medium-bright tone" that is very "flexible" depending on what type of mouthpiece you choose, notably recalling "the warmth of horns of old."
Aesthetically, the Gear4music Alto impressed with "the pillars and fittings...neatly attached" to a "well-built" body, with "some decent engraving on the bell."
The keywork was found to be of the same solid standard as the bodywork, with "some notable features" including double cup arms on the low C and B keys, a helper arm over the Auxiliary F key cup and a "well-designed and placed" top F key.
Blue steeled springs, which power the action, have been "really rather well set," and combined with similarly "well set" pads, make the Gear4music Alto very playable.
"Everything feels like it's where it ought to be," providing a genuinely "well-balanced" experience in the hands.
The full review of the saxophone is available to read on Stephen's website www.shwoodwind.co.uk
The Gear4music Alto Saxophone is available in Nickel, Light Gold, Black & Gold, as well as Vintage, finishes, and can be purchase din a complete package containing everything a student musician need to begin playing.
