Sony says sorry for Whitney Houston price hike

Sony has said it is sorry for upping the price of two of Whitney Houston's albums, hours after her death.

Sony Music has finally apologised for its insensitivity and tactless opportunism after it put up the price on two of Whitney Houston's albums on Apple's iTunes Store just a handful of hours after the star was found dead.

Her album Ultimate Collection went up from £4.99 to £7.99 and her record Whitney: The Greatest Hits rose from £7.99 to £9.99, in a move that caused outrage amongst fans and critics in the music industry.

Sony's apology is seen as something of a copout, with many people questioning the sincerity of it.

Speaking to Billboard, the company said: "Whitney Houston product was mistakenly mispriced on the UK iTunes store on Sunday. When discovered, the mistake was immediately corrected. We apologise for any offence caused."

The singer was found dead in her hotel bath last week in Beverly Hills. She was 48. The current cause of death has yet to be identified.

Houston was renowned for her breathtaking voice and considered one of the greatest female singers of all time. She is best known for hits like Saving All My Love For you, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and I Will Always Love You.
