Slayer bring in temporary guitarist

Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has joined Slayer as Jeff Hanneman recovers from a serious illness.

Metal band Slayer have brought in a new electric guitar player on a temporary basis after group member Jeff Hanneman was struck down with a serious illness.

Hanneman has contracted necrotising fasciitis on his right arm, with the flesh-eating disease believed to have been caused by a spider bite.

He is set to undergo surgery next week, leading Slayer to draft in Exodus guitarist Gary Holt so they can fulfil their upcoming touring commitments.

Slayer guitar player Kerry King said of Hanneman: "We can't pinpoint what day he'll be back, but it will be as soon as he possibly can.

"We can't wait for him to get better."

Slayer have been booked for a number of appearances across the world in 2011, with the band playing several dates in Australia this month and in early March.

Following their run of gigs down under, the rockers will head to the northern hemisphere for shows in the Ukraine, Russia, Norway, Spain and Italy, as well as several other European nations.

They are due to play in the UK in July, when they will appear at the Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth on the same bill as Metallica.
