'Singing' Comet Found
Taken from the European Space Agency's SoundCloud, you can hear the noises that Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko produces due to oscillations in the magnetic field and the comet's environment.
The sounds recorded by unwitting scientists have been increased in frequency 10,000 times to make them audible to human ears. They're being produced by the comet at 40-50 millihertz.
Scientists at the Braunschweig University of Technology have explained that the theory behind the sound is that high-energy particles are colliding with neutral particles, although "the precise physical mechanism behind the oscillations remains a mystery, " says the Head of Space Physics and Space Sensorics.
