X Factor judge Simon Cowell has congratulated boy band One Direction after their LP went to number one in America – thus setting a record for a band from Britain.

Up All Night, the boys' first album, was placed at number one the first week it entered the chart, which is an achievement that has not been matched by any other band from the UK.

Simon Cowell commented on the news, saying: "I couldn't be happier for One Direction, it is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the best fans in the world."

Meanwhile one of the group's singers, Niall Horan, added that at the time the band were created (on The X Factor) even visiting the US would have been unimaginable. He called the number one "unbelievable".

Another One Direction star, Harry Styles, reacted by thanking all of the group's followers who had purchased the LP, and the people of the US in general, who he said had been 'supportive'.

The record gained its Billboard number one by racking up 176,000 sales.
