Shure SM57 Celebrates 50 Years In The Music Industry
The iconic microphone is still one of the stalwarts in terms of modern day recording in a variety of capacities for a clean, professional sound that many use as a go to option for everything from guitar amplifiers to vocals.
Studio engineer Thom Panunzio, who worked with John Lennon, said that this was the microphone of choice for The Beatles frontman:
"John Lennon would only ever sing or talk into a '57. He would not use anything else. In the few years I was lucky enough to work with him I never saw his voice amplified into anything except a 57."
Thom Panunzio, who has also worked with U2, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones added:
"If someone said to me you can only use one mic to record a band, it would without doubt be a 57 for me."
