'Sherlock Holmes violin' goes on display
Posted on 8 Sep 2010 20:56 to category : Instruments News

A special violin created from wood carved from a sycamore tree on the grounds of Arthur Conan Doyle's childhood home has gone on display in Scotland.
Instrument maker Steve Burnett made the violin from material taken from the 170-year-old tree last year and entitled it the 'Sherlock violin', after Conan Doyle's famous detective.
The musical instrument has now been added to the Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, reports Deadline.
"It's a fitting place for it to be amongst a fine collection of beautiful musical instruments," said Mr Burnett.
"I'm honoured to be included in a collection which is held in such high regard."
The sycamore tree was cut down prior to the violin being made because it had diseased roots.
Mr Burnett now intends to turn the remainder of it into more musical instruments, including two more violins, a cello set and a viola.
Last month, ITV news presenter Kate Derham told the Independent she had enjoyed relearning the violin for TV show First Love.
