A scientific study has proved that it is possible to use musical instruments to give people goose bumps.

According to research carried out by psychologist Emily Nusbaum of the University of North Carolina, when listening to music, increased volume, tempo changes and the unexpected start of new instruments can all bring about the physical effect.

She told the Independent that people who have a more emotional response to music have a greater likelihood of experiencing goose bumps.

"For people who experience a lot of chills, music is like a pumping soundtrack to life – supportive and integral in how we experience our surroundings," Ms Nusbaum stated.

Playing a musical instrument can also bring about improvements in mental agility, suggested Independent columnist Christina Patterson in a recent article.

She explained that a study found 84 per cent of children who started learning the violin improved their reading standard by at least two levels.
