A well respected saxophonist who jammed with The Beatles back in the day is to be honoured in Columbus, Ohio.

Gene Walker, who has also played with The Drifters, The Patters and Sam Cook, was described as being a delightful spirit by the jazz musician Ted McDaniel, who will be performing during the evening.

Speaking to the Lantern, McDaniel, a jazz musician, said: "Not only is he a terrific musician, and has been for years, he is a personal friend and a joy to be around.

"He certainly deserves it and has been a musical pillar in the city of Columbus."

In an interview with the Columbus Dispatch, Walker talked of the moment he realised that the saxophone was his musical instrument of choice.

"I said, 'I don't want to play the saxophone; I have to play the saxophone," he explained. "That's how it began."

At the celebration of his contribution to music, there will local musicians as well as two of the saxophonist's ensembles: the Gene Walker Big Band and the Gene Walker Quartet.
