Saxophone legend Sam Rivers has died
A respected musician, Rivers jammed with some of the greats in the jazz world including Miles Davies and Herbie Hancock.
Born in Oklahoma, the talented musician learnt his trade at the Boston Conservatory before kicking off his professional career proper in the bebop era.
Rivers was known for his improvisational skills, the ability to jam in the moment, never failing to surprise audiences with his unusual but intelligent pieces.
He was also a talented flute player and known for composing some fantastic pieces of music.
Something of a multi-instrumentalist, Rivers also mastered the violin, piano, clarinet and trombone.
"Music was his life, music is what kept him alive," said his daughter Monique Rivers Williams.
"My father, in my eyes, was on vacation all his life. He used to tell me, 'I'm working, but I'm loving every minute of it.' Retirement was not in his vocabulary. 'Why do we even have that word,' he used to ask me, 'there should be no such thing.'"
