Saxophone Colossus Sonny Rollins honoured with lifetime achievement award
The Saxophone Colossus, who turns 82 next year, continues to perform regularly and has proved hugely influential throughout his career, performing with luminaries such as Miles Davis, Art Taylor and Jacky McLean.
Rollins work includes a number of compositions that have gone on to become jazz standards, such as Oleo, Airegin, Doxy and St Thomas.
British bass player Christian McBride directed the band who played a tribute to Rollins at the Kennedy Center, where he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
President Barack Obama also paid tribute to the musician's earlier career in New York's Harlem, saying: "For a young musician with a big horn and bigger dreams, it was heaven.
"Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins lived around the corner. Sonny learned melody and harmony from Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis was a regular playing partner."
