Legendary rock drummer Neil Peart of Rush continues to inspire a significant number of people to learn the drums, according to one tutor.
Mike Semerau, a drum instructor based in Chicago, was quoted by the Chicago Tribune this week as saying almost half of his pupils decided to take up the instrument as a result of Peart's influence.
"Probably 50 per cent who come to me cite him as the reason," he remarked.
Peart, who placed 22nd in Stylus Magazine's list of the 50 greatest rock drummers of all time in 2007, is considered to be one of the most influential musicians of his generation.
According to Stylus, "he's cited universally among drummers as a key influence" and is "the node through which all modern rock drummers pass".
Peart himself was influenced by an eclectic range of musicians, from rock stars such as John Bonham and Keith Moon through to jazz artists like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.
