Rugby fan tries to get bagpipe ban lifted
Scotland supporter Matt Strachan is hoping to take his beloved music instrument with him to the games but has been told he will be ejected from the match venues by police if he does so.
"After spending considerable money getting to New Zealand to support my country I was shocked to hear bagpipes were not allowed in the stadiums," he said.
"I've played the pipes in most of the UK stadiums and also in France during the last World Cup and they have always been gratefully received."
And it is not just the musical instrument which has fallen foul of stadium officials in New Zealand, with umbrellas and vuvuzelas also banned.
So far Strachan's campaign has garnered over 500 supporters on Facebook, with reports suggesting that even Scottish sports minister Shona Robison has written to the tournament officials regarding the "oversight".
A spokesman for the Scottish government said: “We are sure this is merely an oversight and the Sports Minister has written to the organisers of the rugby World Cup in New Zealand to request this position is reversed.”
